This is one of the most serene rides in Stone County. South on AR
9 up Dodd Mountain is why they call this place Mountain View. What
a view. Slow and easy today finding creeks, running valleys,
and crossing mountain ridges. Between Mountain View and Rushing is Turkey
Creek. The "wild" in the ride appears when you
least expect it. At Rushing turn LEFT, South on AR 9.
Lean in the curves and smell the wildflowers. Early in the morning
and dusk to midnight watch for our native White Tail Deer, the "wild"
in the ride. Dropping into Shirley is a 90° rollercoaster.
Over the Middle Fork of the Little Red River turn LEFT, East on AR
110. You can pick up the pace a little. The curves open up
and the straights are longer. Before you get to the Greers Ferry
lake, listen to your pipes as you rumble through the esses and cross the
lake bridge. At Greers Ferry you can gas up, eat out, camp, fish,
or get some groceries. After crossing the bridge, you will need to
turn LEFT, East on AR 92 to Drasco. If you like crossing
the lake take AR 225 to Prim and then AR 263 to Woodrow. This will take
you back to AR 92; check the map for a visual idea. This option is
more challenging but full of beauty. Steep grades and sharp turns
abound. At Drasco, turn LEFT, North on AR 5 for about two
miles then LEFT, North again on AR 5 back to Mountain View.
Rolling hills and small farms dot this agricultural part of Stone County.
At Arbanna you will be able to see for miles before you cross Coon Creek
and climb up on Freeze Mountain. Leaving Freeze Mountain you will
drop into a basin North of the Blue Mountain Ridgeline and follow it all
the way back to Mountain View.
ATTENTION: There are pull offs on all roads
in the Ozarks, however most are gravel. Heavy rains also "wash" gravel
onto highways. Be careful on the curves. Lots of folks let their
dogs run free here in the hills and occasionally a cow or a horse.
Watch for the unexpected, especially our native White Tail deer.
They can't run on blacktop but they sure can jump. Depending
on the time of year you ride; you may see RV's, big trucks, road construction,
hunters in orange, or someone sitting in the middle of the road taking a
picture. Share the road and don't be surprised if everyone you meet
waves or "takes the middle out of your lane". We joke about paying taxes
on both sides of the road. Every town has a good place to eat or as we
call it "coffee". Be sure to check for the pie in season and "today's
special". Enjoy your place in the
Mountains.
